Nothing's cozier than plopping down on your couch with a loved one and popping on a classic rom-com. But this year, why not spice your movie night with some classic Bollywood movies? Here's our top picks for what you should check out this weekend!
The coming-of-age rom-com "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" follows the love and lives of a group of friends. Shy Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone), the film's protagonist, crushes on carefree Kabir "Bunny" Thapar (Ranbir Kapoor) during a backpacking trip with friends Avinash "Avi" Arora (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Aditi Mehra (Kalki Koechlin).
Almost a decade later, Naina works as a doctor, while Kabir travels the world as a photographer, living the free-spirit lifestyle he dreamed of. When Aditi announces her engagement, the quartet reunites in India to celebrate. It's clear that the friendship dynamics within the group have shifted severely, though not completely unrecoverable.
At its core, the film tackles themes of love, loss, substance abuse and the desire to leave home with care. Cushioned by an incredible soundtrack, this is one you won't want to miss.
For the classic 90's Bollywood experience, look no further than Karan Johar's "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai." Starring the iconic duo of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, the film switches between the past and present day as young Anjali Khanna (Sana Saeed) pursues her late mother Tina's (Rani Mukerji) dying wish for her father, Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) to marry his best friend from college and Anjali's namesake, Anjali Sharma (Kajol).
Back in time, viewers uncover the college love triangle between Rahul, Anjali and Tina, watching how Rahul and Anjali lose contact when Anjali has the heartbreaking realization that he doesn't love her the same way she does. Tina, who later dies in childbirth, names her daughter after her friend and writes her a letter for every birthday, encouraging her to bring Rahul and Anjali back together.
In the present day, young Anjali conjures up a hilarious scheme to get Anjali and Rahul to reconnect, involving a stint at a summer camp and the cancellation of a wedding. If a tragic, comedic love triangle sounds entertaining, this film's right up your alley — you're sure to laugh and cry along the way.
"Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani"
"Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani" is a perfect amalgamation of vintage Bollywood and modern South Asian cinema. The 2023 rom-com, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, discusses nuances in culture, caste and misogyny.
Bengali journalist Rani Chatterjee (Alia Bhatt) hesitantly falls in love with Punjabi laddoo empire heir Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh) over the course of the film, as the pair navigate their familial differences and their grandparents' incomplete love story.
With its elaborate dance sequences and references to past Bollywood films, the intergenerational love story is sure to touch your heart. From Rocky's excellent comedic timing to Rani's quick wit, it's impossible not to fall for the couple.
If you're looking for a generational love story, both literally and figuratively, "Om Shanti Om" has got you covered. Spanning nearly three decades, the film follows an extra/junior artist named Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) who's trying his best to make it onto the silver screen.
Along the way, he falls in love with an up-and-coming young actress named Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone), who seems to appreciate his good-hearted nature. But after Om gets caught in the crossfire between her and her abusive lover/producer Mukesk Mehra (Arjun Rampal), he winds up — you know what, this might be the point to stop the summary.
The film's so jam-packed with reveals, twists and satisfying moments that diving any further into the plot might be a little too revelatory. Just know that "Om Shanti Om" is filled with vibrant visuals, goofy satire — that gets even better if you're already familiar with Bollywood movies — and a genuinely compelling story about divine retribution.
Taking it way back to the nineties, this list would mean nothing if we didn't pay tribute to the classic, the timeless and the longest running film in Indian cinemas — the one and only "DDLJ."
The film follows Simran Singh (Kajol), an Indian girl who grew up in England but is being forced to return to her mother country and elope with a man she's never met. But before she gets married, Simran manages to convince her father (Amrish Puri) to let her go on a scenic trip across Europe with a bunch of her peers.
Along the way, she meets Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan), a brash but lovable oaf who cleans up his act over the course of the trip. They wind up falling in love, but as Simran's engagement draws closer, Raj must return to India and charm her entire family to secure their blessing. It's cute, chaotic, cozy — it's DDLJ!
If any of these plot summaries sound up your alley, throw a bag of popcorn in the microwave, grab a cozy blanket and tune into some of these iconic bangers this Valentine's Day weekend.
